The number of migrants who arrived in the EU in 2017 exceeded 20,500
According to the International Organization for Migration, the number of deaths of migrants and refugees on their way to Europe since the beginning of the year almost approached last year's data, reaching 547 people.
As of March 19, since the beginning of the year, 20,484 people have arrived in Europe. 80% of them through Italy, the rest through Spain and Greece. By March 21, IOM received additional information about about 5,000 rescued refugees. These figures are significantly lower than the data for the same period of 2016, when 160 thousand 331 people arrived in Europe via the Mediterranean Sea. At the same time, the number of deaths of migrants and refugees on their way to Europe since the beginning of the year almost approached last year's data, reaching 547 people. In the first three months of 2016, 553 people died in the Mediterranean Sea.
