Rome asks the Italian authorities not to let immigrants into the city
Only about 40% of illegal immigrants can stay in Italy and qualify for refugee status.
The mayor of Rome, Virginia Raji, asked the Italian government not to send immigrants to the city any more, as this may lead to an increase in social tension. Raji warned that even to think about creating new centers for the reception of illegal migrants "is impossible, even risky."
Since 2014, in Italy in search of shelter, about 500,000 illegal migrants arrived by sea, mainly from North Africa. Almost 200 thousand people were settled in the centers throughout the country.
The Ministry of the Interior has asked Italian municipalities this year to find a place to accommodate another 250,000 new immigrants. It is expected that their number will grow in comparison with 180 thousand people last year. According to polls, about half of Italians would not want refugees to come to the country.
Italy has to host a larger number of illegal immigrants, as the Nordic countries tightened control at the borders, and many EU countries refuse to participate in plans to accommodate the 160,000 immigrants who came to Italy and Greece.
Now the European Union tries to force the authorities of Poland, Hungary and the Czech Republic through the court to accommodate refugees.
According to the media, about 40% of immigrants to Italy can be eligible for asylum or the right to remain in the country for humanitarian reasons. The rest, most likely, will be regarded as illegal economic migrants subject to deportation.
However, in practice, organizing their deportation is very problematic, as often their home countries refuse to take them back.
