Finnish border guards detained illegal immigrants carrying Russian yacht and crew
The Finnish border service caught Russians who were illegally transporting foreigners across the border. It is known about 17 illegally caught citizens of other countries. Ian Sundell, the head of the investigation team in this case, confirmed the information about the detention of suspects and the water craft. According to him, illegal immigrants were transported to Finland via the Saimaa Canal on June 6. On the ship there were three people in the crew (all of them Russians) and 17 hiding foreigners. Now Finland and Russia are conducting a joint investigation of the case. The detainees are suspected of "organizing illegal migration with aggravating circumstances." "The crew was detained, the yacht used to commit the crime was confiscated," the Border Guard Service noted. At the moment, the identity of foreigners is set. According to Sundell, the investigation of the incident will take several months. All activities will be completed by autumn, after which the materials will be sent to the court. Violators face imprisonment up to six years.
